Audra is a unique artist with regard to the scope and diversity of her talents as a performer and song writer. Audra McDonald, winner of Six Tony Awards in a row and two Grammy Awards in 2015 was named as one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people. President Barack Obama also awarded her the National Medal of Arts -the highest honor in America for excellence in this area. McDonald was born in Fresno California to a music family, completed her classical voice training at New York's Juilliard School. After graduating, she received her very first Tony Award as Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical at the Lincoln Center Theater for Carousel (1994). In the following four years, she received two additional Tony Awards in the featured actress category, for her roles of The Broadway premieres of Terrence McNally's production Master Class (1996) and his show Ragtime (1998) which gave her an unprecedented total of three Tony Awards before the age of thirty. In 2004, she received the fourth Tony for the role in which she was a co-star with Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun. When she was in 2012, she was a leading actor for the role of Porgy and Bess in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess she won the fifth Tony and won the first award in the leading actor category. The actress made Broadway historical records in 2014 as she became the highest popular Tony Award nominee. The role she played as Billie Holiday at Emerson's Bar & Grill in the show, which was also the catalyst for her Olivier Award nominated debut on London's West End in 2017, was the reason she received six awards. She also set the record for having the most awards received by one actor. McDonald's credits in theater include The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (993) Henry IV (2004) and 110 in the Shade (707). Twelfth, Night was McDonald's Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut. Shuffle Along is The Making of the Musical Seduction in 1921 and the Drama That Followed. McDonald was introduced to the public via television as a dramatic actor in Peabody Award winning CBS's Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters first 100 years. After starring with Kathy Bates, Victor Garber and others in the popular Disney/ABC remake of Annie in 1999, McDonald appeared as an recurring role in the network's Law & Order Special Victims Unit. McDonald was awarded her debut Emmy for her role on The HBO version of the Pulitzer Prize winning play Wit directed by Mike Nichols, starring Emma Thompson. In 2003 she was back on television, this time in Mister Sterling produced by Emmy Award-winning Lawrence O'Donnell Jr., starring Josh Brolin. The Bedford Diaries on the WB at the beginning of 2006, and Kidnapped, NBC. In the year 2016, McDonald was nominated for the fourth Emmy Awards for her performance in HBO's Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, a special film. The Bite was a six episode drama about pandemics produced in collaboration with Spectrum Originals in collaboration with CBS Studios. McDonald first played U.S. lawyer Liz Lawrence (now Liz Reddick), in the CBS legal drama The Good Wife, in 2009. In the year 2018, she returned to the role on The Good Fight for Paramount+ as a regular on the series. She received three Critics Choice Award Nominations. The actress also appeared in Julian Fellowes historical drama The Gilded Age.
